Professionalising South African Mathematics Teachers

SACE-Accredited Teacher Fellowship

A two-year, part-time fellowship for practising mathematics teachers across all nine provinces, designed to meet SACE Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. Fellows receive deep subject-matter training in areas where teacher knowledge is weakest (algebra, functions, geometry, statistics), pedagogical coaching, and training in teaching mathematics through South African real-world applications (including climate and energy transition contexts).

Every Fellow becomes a Master Trainer who coaches at least 10 peers annually, creating a powerful national cascade network.

OpenTeach SA Library

A freely available, Creative Commons-licensed repository of CAPS-aligned lesson plans, assessment tasks, manipulative guides, and video demonstrations. All content is peer-reviewed by university mathematics educators and practising teachers. It is structured around CAPS topic progressions with explicit links to Annual Teaching Plans (ATPs).

School-Based Coaching

Ongoing in-school coaching support focused on quintile 1–3 schools. Coaches are recruited from the fellowship alumni network and matched to schools in their own communities where possible. Visits focus on lesson observation, collaborative planning, and analysis of learner assessment data.
